Post-Surgery Recovery: What Patients Must Know

Recovery is where healing truly happens. This guide explains how international patients can recover safely and quickly after surgery in India.

1. First 24 hours after surgery

You will be in the ICU for monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, pain control and fluid balance. Doctors and nurses check you frequently.

2. Pain management

  • IV painkillers
  • Oral medications
  • Nerve blocks
  • Epidural analgesia

Pain reduces significantly within 3–5 days.

3. Mobility & physiotherapy

  • Day 1: sit up, stand with support
  • Day 2–3: walk short distances, begin physiotherapy
  • Week 1–2: increase mobility, strength exercises

4. Diet after surgery

Start with clear liquids, soft foods, high-protein meals and hydration. Avoid oily, spicy and heavy meals.

5. Wound care

  • Keep dressing dry
  • Avoid touching stitches
  • Watch for redness or swelling
  • Follow doctor instructions

6. When you can travel back home

  • 7–10 days after minor surgery
  • 10–14 days after major surgery
  • 3–4 weeks after transplant
